Music Ministry

Saint Mary Church is well known for it’s commitment to excellence in sacred music.  Rendered within the context of traditional sacred Roman Catholic liturgy, music from all historical periods is sung by the choirs and congregation.  Gregorian chant, 16th and 17th century polyphony, classical-era music and modern music from the 20th and 21st centuries all blend together to create deeply spiritual and prayerful Masses and other liturgical events.

The Adult Choir, whose membership is open to all adults and high school students, renders its ministry every Sunday at the 10AM Mass, as well as on Feasts and Solemnities throughout the church year. Its repertoire spans the past six centuries and includes traditional Gregorian chant, sacred polyphony and modern compositions.  The Adult Choir also provides the music every year for the diocesan celebration of Divine Mercy Sunday at the Cathedral of Saint Francis in Metuchen.

The Chamber Choir sings for Feasts and Solemnities throughout the year, as well as for Solemn Vespers and Night Prayer on various occasions during the church year.  Its repertoire consists mainly of sacred polyphony from the 16th and 17th centuries.  The Chamber Choir is also occasionally invited to provide music for other area churches, including our diocesan Shrine of the Blessed Sacrament in Raritan, for Masses both in the Ordinary and Extraordinary Form (The Traditional Latin Mass).  The Chamber Choir is open to individuals by audition.

The Saint Mary Schola Cantorum is open to men and women of high school age or higher.  The Schola Cantorum is made up of two independent groups, the Men’s Schola and the Women’s Schola.  Both ensembles prepare and sing the Gregorian Chant Propers for every Sunday of the Year as well as all Holy Days and Feasts.  The Schola Cantorum also travels to sing for Extraordinary Form Masses at other churches in central New Jersey.

The Handbell Choir, under the guidance of Bell Choir Director Barbara Turso-Dembowski, is open to anyone high school age or older by audition as spaces become available.  Performances at various events throughout the year include the Christmas Concert, the South Amboy Annual Tree Lighting, and for other occasions.

Returning in the Fall of 2010, The Children’s Choir will be open to students in grades 3-8 and will sing every week at the 12 noon Mass, prayerfully rendering music from all periods.
